(OSHKOSH, Wisconsin) - The Schick® Xtreme3 Easy Open Lidstock for Thermoformed Polyester Tray Package has solved a complex case study for Schick’s razor product packaging. By changing to Curwood’s EZ Peel® lidstock, designed for PET forming materials, Schick was able to offer its customers a superior package with a reliable and consistent opening lidstock to enhance consumer convenience and overall product experience. Schick Xtreme3 disposable triple-blade razors, marketed in a printed clear lidstock sealed to a thermoformed polyester (PET) tray, offered the optimum package to view the new X-Treme3 products. However, access to the product was inconsistent and lacked the convenience of the X-Treme3 system, resulting in an inconsistent peel force, delamination of the lidstock upon peel, and occasional tearing of the lidstock upon opening.
Curwood’s EZ Peel® polyester lidstock was tested on Schick’s existing production line without disruption. Curwood’s peelable system allowed Schick to operate within a wider operating window, without affecting designed peel strength of Curwood’s EZ Peel® system. This reliable performance has resulted in overall Schick Manufacturing efficiency gains by decreasing down time on the production lines, less start-up waste and the potential for increased line speeds.
Curwood’s portfolio of lidstock technology advances flexible packaging to a new level by improving overall performance and value of tray-lid style package formats now a competitive, convenient option to everyday packaging needs. This high performance material also opens up further opportunities to transition from paper board or cardboard in carded blister packs, which can save significant base expenses on materials and inventory and handling expenses of die cut card stocks.
In addition to this opportunity for savings, increased marketing possibilities greatly enhance the packaging options companies have in the marketplace.
Marketers can use specialized structures (clear, white, metallized, holographic, two-side printed), specialty inks (thermochromic, glow-in-the-dark, metallics, etc.), and individualized seal strength / performance for each product (EZ Peel and pilfer resistant weld seal options) to expand their promotional options.
The Schick Xtreme3 high-heat resistant exterior provides a high-gloss, highly stable surface for both reverse and surface printing. It also offers the opportunity for up to eight-color process graphics and product information on the product face, while still allowing consumers to have a clear view of the product. The ability to see the product in the package can prevent customers from opening or destroying a package in the store to see the product before buying. Once the customer has purchased the product, the easy open performance of the lidstock assures the consumer’s experience with the package is consistent with their high expectations of the product.
Curwood’s self-manufactured, multilayer, coextruded sealant is the basis for this PET container lidding film. This provides superior seals and machineability over currently available films for thermoformed PET and replaces inferior solvent-based peelable coatings sometimes used in the marketplace. Curwood is the only company offering a film structure with the performance characteristics found in the Schick Xtreme3 Easy Open Lidstock.
