TERRE HAUTE, IN (August 26, 2005) – Bemis Polyethylene Packaging Division (PPD) introduces a new easy-to-open and -close bag that makes it convenient for consumers to use and store food products.

“This new package is an improvement over our previous bag,” says Tracy Miller, Gold ‘n Plump Senior Product Development Manager. “In addition, the bag has been instrumental in helping us meet our business goals. As a result we’ve been able to maintain existing business, and have seen a significant increase in business in other markets.” Miller adds that “with the shelves getting more and more crowded, we needed a package that would visually jump from the freezer case, and these new graphics have a high amount of ‘appetite appeal.’”

The pre-made bag is constructed of a mono layer low density polyethylene (LDPE) film and incorporates a patented Hefty® Slide-Rite® slider zipper closure system. Product is loaded from the bottom, and the bag is then heat-sealed and trimmed in line.

The attention-getting, colorful graphics were produced via 8-color flexographic printing at the Bemis PPD Facilities in Terre Haute, In. “We created graphics to help this product stand out and are visually appealing,” said Dan Bloedow, Bemis PPD VP, Market Development. “Our first key step was the pre-planning we did with Gold ‘n Plump.” Adds Miller, “we all really functioned as a cohesive team throughout the entire project. Plus, they really held the printing right on, and were very successful in helping us implement our vision. They really wanted us to succeed.”

According to Bloedow, “consumers quickly tire of closure systems that don’t work. The Slide-Rite® zipper is easy to open and close on a consistent basis.” As a result, consumers will then keep the product in its original package, rather than repacking it into another storage container, as they have confidence the bag will remain closed. “This also helps to insure our customer’s product name and information stays with the product, increasing visibility and brand recognition.”

The bag also features a tamper-evident membrane within the slider zipper, which remains sealed until the consumer initially unzips and opens the bag upon first usage. “This feature helps to increase consumer confidence and satisfaction that the product is safe,” says Keith Heyne, Sales and Marketing Manager for Pactiv Corporation, manufacturers of the Hefty® Slide-Rite® system.

“This package has produced the best results of any package to date,” Miller highlights, adding that “we will be expanding the usage of this type of bag along other product lines in the future.”
